Kong Tug Toy

After the poor performance of my Bamboo Tug Toy followed by an encore poor performance from my Kong Wubba I decided to find a more durable toy to replace these shredded (nylon) predecessors. Being a loyal Kong customer (although I also like Nylabone), I decided to start in the Kong section at my local PetSmart. I was actually surprised to find that Kong also makes a tug toy which is made of plastic and rubber instead of nylon. I have not seen this product in the past. I purchased one for ten dollars and took it home to try it out.

The good news about this product is that it is very durable. The product is designed like a figure eight with the primary construction being of a hard plastic. This red plastic area has ribbing throughout creating gripping and gnawing surfaces. Each end of the tug toy as well as the middle section are made of hard Kong rubber. This black area has finger grips molded into the rubber to allow you to get a good grip to wrestle with your pup. I was looking forward to some good contests with my four month old pup who is now a biscuit over forty pounds.

The bad news is that my dog doesn’t like to play tug of war with me. He actually likes the toy. He will sit and gnaw away on it like any of his other toys. However, when I present him with one end of the toy to play a game of tug of war, he doesn’t seem all that interested. With the Bamboo tug toy he actually battled me a bit. With the Kong tug toy he doesn’t seem to want to grab his end very tightly. I don’t think it hurts his mouth...it simply seems like he doesn’t get it. Every once in a while he will tug a bit, but not very hard.
